Led by Hong Kong’s pro-crypto financial secretary, Paul Chan, and composed of government officials, regulators, and industry experts, the task force aims to promote the development of Web3 technologies over the next two years.

Chan, a staunch advocate for cryptocurrencies, recognizes the immense potential of Web3 and considers it a “golden opportunity” for Hong Kong. In an official statement, he emphasized that blockchain technology, the foundation of Web3, possesses qualities such as disintermediation, security, transparency, and cost-effectiveness. He believes these features can address various challenges faced by finance, trade, business operations, and everyday life.
Hong Kong’s ambition to emerge as a prominent hub for decentralized technologies has long been apparent. In 2022, the region introduced an official policy statement on Virtual Assets, which garnered favorable market feedback. This positive reception subsequently prompted the establishment of a task force entrusted with offering guidance for the sustainable and conscientious advancement of decentralized technologies in Hong Kong.
